When I was asked to review The Handbuilt Home, a new book by Ana White, I jumped at the chance. Not only because I want to learn how to build furniture, but because I’m a big fan of Ana’s. I was able to attend her session at the Haven Conference over the summer, and I even won the cubby organizer that she designed and built there. If you aren’t familiar with Ana, here’s what you need to know: She’s a mom and homemaker from Alaska with an awesome DIY blog, Ana-White.com. She taught herself how to build furniture after developing serious do-it-yourself skills while building her own home, board by board, with her husband. Yes, you read that correctly. They built their house all by themselves. They lived in their garage while the whole building process was going on, and even had a baby who learned to crawl on the garage floor while the home was being built. Not only can Ana handle power tools, but I was totally awed and amused by her ability to build furniture while wearing super high heels at Haven.

It’s an impressive house full of brilliant, space-saving furniture designs — all built entirely out of materials found in hardware stores, due to Ana’s remote location in rural Alaska. In all, this lovely tiny house cost the client around USD $60,000 — split evenly between materials and labour. To make building things more accessible to determined do-it-yourselfers, Ana will soon be offering free DIY plans on how to build the different pieces of furniture, including the whole house and the automatic bed. For more information and plans, check out Ana White’s website.

The book is divided into sections based on what room each piece belongs in. (Entryway, Family Room, etc.) It features pieces built by Ana and also by other DIY-ers using Ana’s plans. There are some seriously beautiful pieces of furniture in this book. I especially loved all of the fun ideas for children’s rooms. This book is so inspiring to me as a DIY-lover and it really makes me want to get in gear and build something! Ana really makes you feel like if she can do it, then so can you. (In high heels.)

One of the first impressions upon entering is how roomy the interior is, thanks to the large windows and to the pared-down layout at the centre of the home, resulting in about 100 square feet of open space right in the middle. Ana calls the home “an open concept rustic modern beauty that looks simple, but does all sorts of things.”

Made 2 of these the other day. Took me about 5 1/2 hours from start to finish (for both). That’s for 1 person doing everything on the ground. These are absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Everybody loves them. Now we just have to finish (protect) them, and make some cushions for them. I added 1 more 2×4 to the back, just under the top rail. May add 1 (either 2×2 or 2×4) along the seat to keep the cushions from going out the back. Thanks Ana.

Probably the most ingenious part is the DIY retracting bed that can be raised above the sitting area’s sectional sofa, which also doubles as storage and as a guest bed. Using garage hardware, cables and pins to lock the bed’s position in place, the bed can lift up and down with the push of a button — all done for around $500, and eliminating the need for space-consuming stairs. With the addition of a wall-mounted television, this area is also the entertainment centre — whether one is watching in bed, or from the sofa. In addition, the coffee table storage cubes can be used as portable steps for getting into bed, or their lids used as laptop cushions.

At the middle of the home, only the slim profile of a built-in console occupies the space over the wheel well. However, this is no ordinary console, as the sliding doors on the pipe rail can not only hide clutter, but can also transform into two desks, or one long table, either running along the console or as a full-sized dining table for entertaining guests.

To make the seat part of this sofa, we are basically going to frame up a mini floor. Just attach 5 of the 25-1/2” long 2x4s to 2 of the 72” long 2x4s, spacing about 16” apart. Use 2-1/2” exterior decking screws. This completes the seat frame.
